In
MayheM I Trust
On December 24, 1980, quite possibly the greatest
Mixed Martial Artist was born. I remember the first time I saw him;
shamefully it wasn’t until UFC 52. For somebody who was into Mixed
Martial Arts (MMA) since watching the first UFC, I should have known of
Jason “MayheM” Miller, but I only followed the big organizations like
the UFC and Pride FC at the time, not realizing what I was missing with
the smaller shows. Anyway, the 6’1”, 185 pound fighter (170 pounds for
this particular fight) made his way to the octagon wearing an awesome
mask, a hoodie with the arms cut out, and he threw money to the crowd;
I instantly knew that this was a guy I would crown as my favorite.
His opponent was Georges St. Pierre (GSP), a rising star in the sport
who, at the time, was disposing of fighters rather easily (though he
had lost to Matt Hughes, the UFC Welterweight Champion at the time, two
fights prior). However, MayheM, equipped with a red spot in his hair
instead of his normal “strip of doom,” refused to allow GSP to have an
easy night. I remember about halfway through the first round, MayheM
tried to get off the ground with a kick up flip and his face was met
with the foot of GSP. MayheM just smiled, calmly wiped the blood away,
and fought through an exciting round. On his way back to the corner,
blood was pouring down his face, and what did MayheM do? HE SMILED! His
nose was busted, blood was everywhere, and he just smiled, obviously
enjoying the fact that he was in a great fight. MayheM would go on to
lose the fight by a unanimous decision, but he gained more fans as the
loser than GSP did as the winner.
His excellent fighting abilities aside, MayheM is probably the most
entertaining fighter on the planet, and most likely the Universe. From
wearing a grill (at one time), to sporting a mask, to his amazing
entrances, to the exploding sword he once used in an entrance, MayheM
is the epitome of spectacle. He gives some of the funniest interviews,
makes some of his own web episodes for his fans to enjoy, and keeps in
contact with his fans. Did I mention that he has his own cult? He calls
them MayheM Monkeys, where one receives a number and agrees to be
pro-random and anti-boredom. The man isn’t just a character though as
he’s accumulated an MMA record of 20 wins with only 5 losses (though
the record fluctuates depending on what one deems an official,
professional bout).
I am a diehard fan of Jason “MayheM” Miller’s and proudly I’m MayheM
Monkey #1717 (the number I asked for). He is a great human being who
works his hardest to put on an exciting show for MMA fans everywhere,
whether they’re rooting for or against him. If you get the chance, go
to his website at www.MayhemMiller.com or visit his MySpace page at www.myspace.com/MayhemMiller and check this guy out; read his blogs if you
get the chance as well since they’re always rather humorous. It’s great
to root for Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, and Fedor
Emelianenko, but Jason “MayheM” Miller is the real deal and you should
give him a shot; WORD=BORN!
If you have any questions or comments for G.K., email him at GK@LostYouthNation.com and be sure to check out the MayheM section on
our site to see some videos and pictures of the man himself.
